Essential Kitchen Items for Your First Apartment
One of the most exciting parts about moving into your first apartment is that you get to shop for all of the things you need to set up your first home. Your kitchen is the room that is likely to need the most supplies, but what things do you absolutely need to have, and what can you live without? Set your kitchen up the right way by making sure these items are on our shopping list.
Dishes, Glasses, and Silverware
These items are the most basic things you need for your kitchen. Your kitchen is for serving up food and drinks, so you can’t skimp on these items. If possible, invest in a full set of dishes and flatware. If you’re trying to save money, it is a good idea to have at least four place settings of dishes to start—you can add more to your collection later. Aim for quality purchases that will last, instead of poorly made items that may be more affordable but are likely to break.
Pots and Pans
Unless you are a foodie who loves to cook, your first kitchen doesn’t have to have a huge selection of pots and pans. A starter kit of basic pans can be a good way to get started. Make sure you have at least one frying pan, one saucepan, and one baking sheet. Stockpots and casserole dishes are also handy things to have. Once you get used to cooking in your kitchen, you can build your collection with things you know you’ll use.
Tools
You will need some basic kitchen tools to complete your cooking supplies. A spatula, can opener, and set of knives are necessary, as are measuring cups and spoons. A cutting board is also helpful to have. If you’re a coffee drinker, be sure a coffee machine is on your shopping list.
