CHIROPRACTIC CARE I did some sandbag filling and am really sore across my lower back at the waist. Do I need to see a chiropractor, or will the pain go away on its own? A Whether or not the pain will go away on its own depends on what is causing the pain. Pain in the lower back can be caused by injury to, or improper balance of the muscles, ligaments, discs, or vertebrae in the area. Minor strains and sprains are the most common injury sustained when performing the type of task you mentioned. For a strain or sprain I recommend icing the area for the first two to four days post injury and heating the area after that. Ice decreases inflammation and pain and heating increases blood flow to the region which will help heal the injured tissue. Whether using ice or heat, only use for a maximum of 20 minutes every other hour. If the pain is severe, or if you are unsure of what to use at home for pain, set up an appointment with your chiropractor who can diagnose and determine a proper course of treatment for your condition.
